Toolkit for Defending Tenants Against Homelessness Prevention Cuts
For many families across the country, our federal Continuum of Care (CoC) and Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) programs have been essential in moving them out of homelessness and into safe and stable housing. Operated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), these programs make it possible for around 750,000 people to keep a roof over their heads. It’s one key tool in our toolbox for ending the housing crisis.
These crucial sources of assistance are now at risk. The Trump administration is threatening to cut funding to these programs, which will put tenants who receive subsidies through HUD’s CoC and ESG programs at risk of losing their housing and other support.
This will worsen the housing crisis, hurt poor and working people, and result in more people losing their homes amidst already record high homelessness. That’s why we’re fighting back.
Our new toolkit provides resources and strategies for advocates working to defend program participants from losing their housing. It breaks down how to defend against program cuts as well as evictions, with detailed scenario examples, sample templates, practice tips, and further information about fair housing accommodations.
This advocacy guide was written alongside our partners at the National Homelessness Law Center (NHLC).
