The National Housing Law Project on State of the Union: Trump’s Actions Lead to Eviction, Homelessness, and Instability

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The National Housing Law Project today released the following statement by Executive Director Shamus Roller ahead of the State of the Union:

“Tonight Trump will try to sell us on his unpopular, cruel, and violent agenda by misleading the American people about how his administration’s actions will address the housing crisis. Trump’s actions will only lead to eviction, homelessness, and instability.

“While he’s at the podium, his administration is behind the scenes doing everything they can to unlawfully circumvent Congress’ power, gutting HUD, and dismantling programs that keep our neighbors housed. These attacks will worsen the housing crisis for all of us, while targeting immigrants, Black people, poor people, and people with disabilities. Trump has nodded towards affordability but his budget proposals and policy actions have made things worse. Congress soundly rejected Trump’s slash and burn spending strategy last year, and we expect them to do it again when he releases his upcoming budget.

“The Trump administration is attempting to undermine our freedom to live in a safe and stable home. At the National Housing Law Project, we are doubling down on building a housing system that puts people over profit and works for all of us. We won’t stop fighting for our freedoms, our families, and our futures.”
