NHLP and PIF Launch Campaign to Keep Immigrants Whole and Housed in Response to Trump’s Cruel and Unlawful Immigrant Housing Proposal

Keep Families Together Campaign Helped Organize 30,000 People to Defeat First Trump Administration’s Immigrant Housing Proposal in 2019

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The National Housing Law Project and Protecting Immigrant Families, two leading organizations at the intersection of housing, immigration, and poverty, today launched the Keep Families Together campaign to fight against the Trump administration’s cruel proposal to evict families with mixed immigration status from HUD housing. The proposal would force families with “mixed” immigration status to either separate or lose the assistance they rely on to keep a roof over their heads, putting them at risk of eviction and, in worst cases, homelessness.

“No matter where we come from, how long we’ve lived here, or what language we speak, our country has the resources to ensure that all of us have a safe place to call home. But regardless of immigration status, tenants across the country are forced to make impossible choices between keeping a roof over their heads or putting food on the table because of the high cost of housing. President Trump and Secretary Turner are exploiting the economic crises they helped create to sow division, scapegoat immigrants, and destroy the federal housing programs, all while fueling Trump’s unlawful power grab,” said the Keep Families Together campaign. “With help from advocates, tenants, and organizers, we defeated this unlawful proposal in 2019, and we are ready to do it again. We wholeheartedly reject this administration’s shameless attempt to divide us and distract from doing their jobs. We are committed to protecting immigrants and keeping families whole and housed.”

In 2019, when the Trump administration proposed a similar rule, the Keep Families Together campaign helped submit a record-breaking 30,000 comments to the proposal, which resulted in successfully delaying the final rule until HUD withdrew it in 2021. The Keep Families Together campaign aims to once again organize tens of thousands of people to fight back against – and defeat – the Trump administration’s proposal. The Keep Families Together website is in English and Spanish and includes resources for tenants, advocates, and organizers.
