National Housing Law Project: Trump’s Cruel Budget Proposal Takes Housing Away From America’s Poor And Working Families

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The National Housing Law Project (NHLP) today released the following statement by Executive Director Shamus Roller in response to Trump’s full budget proposal:

“The United States has the resources to ensure that all of us can live in safe communities with housing, education, health care, and a good-paying job. However, Trump’s budget proposal breaks his campaign promise to lower costs for American families. His intentionally cruel proposal would finish what billionaire Elon Musk started by cutting crucial programs and undermining our ability to take care of each other.

“The appropriations power rests with Congress and presidents’ budget proposals are often ignored. But if budgets are a reflection of values, this proposal is morally bankrupt. Among NHLP’s priorities, it zeroes out funding for a host of programs at HUD and the USDA that help house poor and working people like public housing, project-based rental assistance, and rural vouchers. It eliminates funding for the Legal Services Corporation, which plays a critical role in providing some access to justice for the poorest Americans. Congressional leaders must do their jobs and reject this destructive proposal. They must protect poor and working families by fully funding our government and the programs that keep us housed, fed, and healthy.”
