June 21, 2017: NHLP Partners with ChangeLab Solutions's The BLOCK to Explore the Intersection Between Housing and Health

NHLP is excited to share the launch of The BLOCK Project, an initiative from ChangeLab Solutions. Over the last year, NHLP has partnered with The BLOCK Project team to explore the relationship between health and housing. This week, ChangeLab Solutions introduced on Medium the Porch Light Debates, a series of provocative conversations illuminating tensions at the intersection of health and housing practices and highlighting the opportunities and challenges hospitals, public health departments, and housing authorities have to improve health equity. NHLP contributed a piece on access to justice as a public health strategy to reduce displacement and other negative effects of gentrification.

Decades of research have shown that safe, stable, affordable housing sets the foundation for health. Housing located near high-performing schools, quality jobs, healthy food, safe parks, and dependable transportation can ensure communities prosper and thrive. Yet, many housing policies reinforce discrimination and economic exclusion, leading to disinvestment and inequitable health outcomes. These forces have compounded health disparities and made it difficult for local governments and institutions to ensure the health and well-being of all residents. Over the summer, ChangeLab Solutions is publishing a series exploring the intersection of health and housing, kicked off by Richard Rothstein, author of The Color of Law. In the fall, they’ll publish resources providing clear guidance to hospitals, public health departments, and housing authorities about how to build a comprehensive healthy housing practice.
