Each of you soon will receive a letter asking you for financial support for the Housing Law Project. I hope that those of you who haven't already made such contributions will do so. You all know better than anyone how essential NHLP is to your own efforts to provide housing justice for poor people. You know how hard these past few years have been for NHLP's small, dedicated staff. David's death was a severe blow to everyone, but most hurtful for the people who worked with him every day. Before David's death, the lost federal funding had forced people to take time from being lawyers to be fundraisers.

I want to urge you all both to make contributions as generous as you can now, and also to pledge to make monthly contributions in the future. I do this, and I must say that I find it easy -- when I pay my rent, I also write a check to NHLP.

We'd all like to think that an organization as essential as NHLP always will be with us. Unfortunately, we've lost other essential organizations in the past -- including the National Committee Against Discrimination in Housing, Suburban Action Institute, and the New Jersey Public Advocate. We who know best the necessity of maintaining the Housing Law Project need to be as generous as possible.

Many thanks to you all.
