JOB OPENING FOR 4 ATTORNEYS, 1 SOCIAL WORKER AND 1 OUTREACH WORKER

The Housing Unit of the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles is actively searching for 4 law school graduates, 1 social worker and 1 outreach worker to be part of a 6-member AmeriCorp team working the the Los Angeles area, including Long Beach, on a Housing Preservation Project. The goal of the project is to preserve neighborhoods and improve the housing stock of the City of Los Angeles. The attorneys will provide technical and legal assistance to non-profit community organizations and low-income individuals in the areas of affordable housing development and preservation, eviction defense, slum abatement and preserving public and subsidized tenancies.

The social worker will coordinate public benefits with tenants who are being evicted because of problems with entitlement programs. S/he will also assist in finding housing and moving assistance for seniors, and develop a referal list for LAFLA and other organizations to use.

The outreach worker will schedule and coordinate outreach and education with community groups, their staff/clients, tenants in public and private housing, and will work with groups of tenants in affirmative slum litigation cases.

AmeriCorps members receive a living allowance of approximately $18,000, a post-service education award of $4725 per term. The position includes health benefits, bar dues, etc.
