JOB DESCRIPTION
STAFF ATTORNEY
HOUSING RIGHTS AND HOMELESSNESS PREVENTION UNIT (DENVER OFFICE)

NATURE OF WORK:
This position requires demonstrated high quality legal skills with an aggressive, imaginative and energetic approach to meeting the legal needs of the poor. Attorney must be prepared to handle fast moving, high volume caseload, representing clients in eviction, foreclosure and bankruptcy actions. Attorney must also be willing to undertake individually, and as co-counsel, complex litigation.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
‒ Client interviews, investigation and preparation of legal documents and papers;
‒ Negotiations, trial appellate work in state and federal courts;
‒ Advice and aggressive representation of clients in accordance with program priorities;
‒ Develop relationships with the community served and the leaders of that community;
‒ Keep current on general and specialized housing, consumer, and bankruptcy law developments;
‒ Assume an active, voluminous and significant caseload;
‒ Participate in complex and major litigation and other special projects within a local office or program wide, such as litigation involving legal issues affecting numbers of low-income clients, drafting of legislation or regulations, lobbying or participation in administrative rule-making in accordance with the regulations and restrictions of the Legal Services Corporation;
‒ Participate in office or program wide projects to provide training and/or community education or other information to agencies, advocates, clients, or community groups about legal services and about legal issues and rights of interest to low-income persons;
‒ Consult and co-counsel with other attorneys and paralegals, where appropriate.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Applicant must be a graduate of an accredited law school, and must be licensed to practice law in Colorado or qualify for admission to the Colorado Bar by Motion. Experience in legal practice, particularly in housing law or related work, is preferred. Sensitivity to the legal needs of low-income people and people of color is required.
SALARY:
Based on union scale. Liberal fringe benefits.
