Housing Tax Credits Guidebook Now Available

The ninth edition of a housing tax credit guidebook has recently been published. TAX CREDITS FOR LOW INCOME HOUSING: OPPORTUNITIES FOR DEVELOPERS, NON-PROFITS AND COMMUNITIES UNDER PERMANENT TAX ACT PROVISIONS (9th ed. Feb. 1996), by Joseph Guggenheim.

The tax credit is a major federal subsidy that uses the tax code to help pay the costs of developing lower income housing. The credit generates an equity contribution from investors that can cover a substantial portion of the costs of building or rehabilitating affordable housing. Each year, over $3 billion in housing aid is generated through these tax credits, assisting about 100,000 housing units.

TAX CREDITS FOR LOW INCOME HOUSING explains the provisions of the tax credit program in understandable lay language. It contains helpful information on the law, regulations and agency issuances governing the program. It also analyzes the feasibility of developing housing with the credit, suggests strategies for using the credit, and provides guidance on obtaining the equity capital that the credit generates.

This 398-page guidebook contains 34 appendices, 21 tables and is available in two formats: $66.00 softcover, plus $5.00 shipping; or $175.00 looseleaf binder with three periodic supplements, plus $10.00 shipping. Orders must be placed directly with the publisher, Simon Publications, P.O. Box 229, Glen Echo, MD 20812, Tel. (301) 320-5771, or by contacting the author, Joseph Guggenheim, at (301) 320-5771.
