Who we are
The National Housing Law Project (NHLP) is a national housing and legal
advocacy center. It was established in 1968 to provide specialized
legal assistance on housing and urban development issues to attorneys working
for the then newly created legal services program. Since then, NHLP
has expanded its mission to advance housing justice for poor people by
increasing and preserving the supply of decent, affordable housing; by
improving existing housing conditions, including physical conditions and
management practices; by expanding and enforcing low-income tenants' and
homeowners' rights; and by increasing housing opportunities for racial
and ethnic minorities.
NHLP has been responsible for many critically important changes to federal
housing policy and programs that have resulted in improved housing and
living conditions for poor people. Working with a nationwide network
of low-income housing advocates, NHLP has helped preserve millions of units
of affordable housing and established many fundamental rights now claimed
by poor tenants and homeowners.
NHLP is a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3), organization that receives its support
from foundations, corporations, individuals and The State Bar of California.
