Housing Protections for Victims and Survivors of Domestic Violence
NHLP’s Housing Protections for Victims and Survivors of Domestic Violence was established to advance the housing rights and prevent the homelessness of survivors of domestic violence. In a formal acknowledgment of the causal relationship between domestic violence and homelessness, Congress included housing protections for residents of federally assisted housing in its 2005 re-authorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). In 2007, NHLP launched this initiative in California to enforce implementation of the VAWA housing protections, which had been largely ignored to that point. In 2008, we expanded the initiative’s geographic platform, becoming a technical assistance provider for the U.S. Department of Justice, offering technical assistance and training to their grant recipients nationwide.
